Privacy Policy

Last updated: Oct 6, 2026

1. Introduction

JoyProject Holdings, LLC ("JoyProject," "we," "us," "our") runs the JoyProject mobile apps and the website at joyproject.com (together, the "Service"). JoyProject helps people pray, serve and gather with their neighbors. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use and share it, and the choices you have. Please also read our Terms of Service.

2. Information You Give Us

  • Account information: your mobile phone number (we sign you in with a text-message code), your name, and, if you add it, your email address.
  • Profile information you choose to add: profile photo, bio, occupation, home church, a favorite Bible verse, and interests such as passions, gifts and goals.
  • Location you choose: the area you set for your feed and the locations of the posts and events you create. If you allow location access, we use your device's location to suggest this, and we store the location you pick.
  • Content: prayer requests, needs, events, fundraisers, petitions, stories, photos, videos, comments, updates, reactions, RSVPs, and messages you send in chat. Some of this, like prayer requests, may contain sensitive information, including about your faith or health. Share only what you are comfortable sharing, and do not share another person's sensitive information without their permission.
  • People you invite: if you allow contacts access, the app reads your address book on your device so you can pick people. We receive only the contacts you choose to invite or name on a post (their name, phone number and/or email) and use them to send that invitation. Invited people can unsubscribe from further messages.
  • Donations: when you give, our payment processor, Stripe, collects your payment details. We never receive or store your full card number. We keep a record of the gift (amount, any tip, recipient, and the name, email and message you provide).
  • Churches and organizations: if you manage a page, we collect the information needed to verify and run it, such as contact details and, for payouts, information Stripe requires.
  • Messages to us: anything you send when you contact us or report content.

3. Information We Collect Automatically

  • Device and app information: device type, operating system, app version, and a push-notification token.
  • Usage information: the screens you view and actions you take (for example creating a post, RSVPing, sharing or giving), which we measure with Google Analytics for Firebase linked to your account ID, plus the posts you view and your activity dates.
  • Diagnostics: crash and error reports collected with Sentry.
  • Log information: our servers and service providers record requests, including IP addresses, for security and troubleshooting.
  • Website: joyproject.com may use cookies or similar technologies for analytics and to keep you signed in.

4. App Permissions

The app asks before using these features, and you can change them anytime in your device settings:

  • Location (only while using the app): to show what's happening near you and to place your posts. We never track your location in the background.
  • Contacts: to let you invite people (see above).
  • Camera, microphone and photos: to record stories and add photos and videos.
  • Calendar: to add events you RSVP to. We only add events; we don't read your calendar.
  • Notifications: to send you updates.

5. How We Use Information

  • To create your account, sign you in and keep it secure, including preventing spam and fraud (we use Google reCAPTCHA).
  • To show you posts, events and people near you and to run features like chat, groups, giving and reminders.
  • To send notifications, such as activity on your posts, event reminders, prayer-campaign reminders, new posts near you, and announcements about events. You can turn push notifications off in settings.
  • To review content for safety. Text you post (including names, bios, posts, comments and messages to pages) is automatically checked for harmful content using Google's AI (Gemini), and content may be hidden while it's reviewed. We also review reports from users.
  • To process donations and help organizations receive them.
  • To understand how the Service is used, fix problems and improve it.
  • To comply with law and enforce our Terms.

6. What Others Can See

  • Public posts, public groups, events, organizations and city pages can be seen by anyone, including on joyproject.com and in search engines like Google and Bing. If you post anonymously, your name is not shown with the post.
  • Your profile (name, photo, bio, church, interests and general area) can be seen by others on JoyProject. Your phone number and email are shown only to you and the people you're connected with, and your exact location and birthday are never shown to others.
  • Private groups and church-only or invite-only events are shown only to their members or invitees (including anyone an organizer sends a private invite link to), their organizers and JoyProject administrators. They are not listed in public feeds, on joyproject.com or in search engines.
  • When you sign a petition or join a prayer campaign, you may appear as your first name and last initial, unless you choose to hide your name.
  • When you give, the organization or fundraiser organizer receives your name, email and message, and gifts may appear on the fundraiser.

7. How We Share Information

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for targeted advertising. We share information only as described here:

  • Service providers who help us run the Service under contract, only as needed:
    • Stripe (payments and payouts)
    • Stream (chat)
    • Google (Firebase push notifications, analytics and settings; Maps and location search; reCAPTCHA; Gemini content moderation; Google Workspace email)
    • Amazon Web Services (hosting, file storage, text messages and verification calls)
    • Bunny.net (video hosting)
    • Sentry (error reporting)
    • Papertrail (server logs)
    • Expo (website and app-update hosting)
    • Slack (internal alerts to our team, for example about new donations, page-claim requests and moderation)
  • Organizations you give to or join, as described above, and Planning Center, only if a church chooses to connect it (we import that church's events and groups; we don't send your data to Planning Center).
  • Legal and safety: when required by law, or to protect the rights, safety and property of our users, the public or JoyProject.
  • Business changes: if JoyProject is involved in a merger, acquisition or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of it.

8. How Long We Keep Information

We keep your information while your account is active. When you delete content, it is removed from the Service, though copies may remain in backups and logs for a limited time. When you delete your account, we delete your profile and personal information. Content you posted publicly may remain without your name attached, and we keep records we're required to keep, such as donation records for accounting and tax purposes.

9. Your Choices and Rights

  • Edit your profile and delete your posts at any time in the app.
  • Delete your account in the app under Settings > Delete Account, or by emailing us.
  • Turn off push notifications in the app or your device settings, and turn off location, contacts, camera and other permissions in your device settings.
  • Ask us for a copy of your information, or to correct or delete it, by emailing team@joyproject.com. Depending on where you live (for example California, Virginia or Colorado), you may have additional rights under local law; we will honor them as required and won't treat you differently for using them.

10. Children

JoyProject is not for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child under 13 has given us information, contact us and we will delete it.

11. Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information, such as encrypted connections. No system is perfectly secure, so please keep your phone and account secure.

12. Where We Process Information

JoyProject is based in the United States, and we and our service providers process information in the United States.

13. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy. We will post the updated policy here and change the date above, and for significant changes we will notify you in the app.
